Scientific American Explorations is attempting to go where few magazines have gone before. According to the editors, this quarterly will encourage parents and children to discover the fun of science together. There aren't many magazineslet alone science magazinesthat are marketed to family audiences. Explorations' editors suggest the reader use the magazine as a guide to direct their family to activities that will illuminate science and technology.

Though edited for parents, the magazine intends to bring out a children's natural curiosity and use it to develop their interest in science. Explorations hopes this interest will create a bond between children and parents. The editors say they don't expect parents to become their science teachers, but rather take an active part in expanding their children's horizons.

The premiere issue contained a region-by-region calendar of exhibits and events, and feature articles on making the most of a museum visit, the U.S./Russian space station, a family vacation to Space Camp and five ways to improve you child's science education.

The minimag for kids contained experiments to try at home and a story about Galileo in comic book format. Older children will find that the colorful and easy-to-read design makes it possible to enjoy the part intended for parents, too.

Explorations encourages families to come together by promoting the values science and technological literacy.
