Brill's Content, the self-proclaimed "independent voice of the information age," offers readers the skinny on what goes on behind the cameras, presses and browsers.

Steven Brill, who brought us Court TV and The American Lawyer magazine, plans to tackle what he sees as a lack of accountability for journalists. His staff includes senior journalists from TIME, U.S. News and World Report, SmartMoney, The Washington Post, The New Yorker and NBC News. "The idea of holding the press accountable in a monthly magazine could be a really exciting venture that might well fill a vacuum out there," said Howard Kurtz, the media reporter for The Washington Post and contributor to Content.

All news isn't bad news, Brill claims. He plans to balance Content by focusing half of its features on the publications that do the job well. However, its primary purpose is to expose the world of "nonfiction media" and raise public levels of skepticism and expectation about the media.

Although others' efforts to launch similar publications have failed due to insufficient funds, Content is unlikely to face similar problemsat least for now. Brill, who made millions off the sales of Court TV and The American Lawyer, put up the majority of the $27 million needed to start Content himself.

Other investors include television mogul Barry Diller, real estate executive Howard Millstein and Lester Pollack, a prominent Wall Street investor. Content hit the newsstands June 30, with an introductory cover price of $2.95 and a ratebase of 150,000.
