"IN" POWER

When Gareb Shamus launched Wizard in 1995, his motive was to create a guide to the newest of the new in comics. Wizard was included in our look at the top 15 launches of the last 15 years, and Shamus' newest title "IN" Power made it into this year's top 30 launches.

"IN" Power takes the Wizard technique of focusing on the "newest of the new" and applies it to toys, video games, and collectibles. What's "in" of course is Pokémon, and "IN" Power doesn't hesitate to tap this trend. More than half of the launch issue is about Pokémon, and many pages feature a small "Poke Facts" box that tells a little history and gives a description of individual "pocket monsters."

Besides the heavy focus on Pokémon cards, video games and toys, the magazine also covers new collecting sensations in wrestling such as Batman Beyond, Beast Machines, and Um Jammer Lammy. If you're not in the know about Beast Machines and Um Jammer Lammy, don't worry, your kids surely are. Shamus says he gets most of the ideas about what's in from reader contact and letters.

There's no doubt that kids want to read about what's "in." After all, Sixteen magazine, which has been published for 40 years, doesn't cover teen sensations from the 1960s, but focuses on pop wonders like 98 Degrees and B*Witched. That focus on what's in has carried Wizard to a circulation of nearly a quarter million on comics alone; imagine what Pokémon can do for "IN" Power.
