HONEY

Magazines like Honey, launched in March by Harris Publications, remind us the world is too diverse for all female readers to be lumped together into the audience of one magazine. Like Latingirl or Bride Again, Honey picks a specific cultural segment and seeks to be its defining voice.

Honey features "Entertainment, Style, Life for Her," and the "her" refers to the young black woman. With features on the promising careers and lucid styles of women like Tyra Banks, Lil' Kim and Lauryn Hill, Honey celebrates the young black woman by offering its readers a look at their own potential and style as reflected in the mirrors of the celebrities' lives.

It's both a hero's journal because of articles like "The 55 Hottest Women in Music, Fashion & Film" and a practical service magazine because of pieces like "Spring Favors: It's in the air! Flowers, feathers and other fly things!" The most notable aspect of Honey is that it can mix heroines and practical affirmationa story about budget fashion shares equal space with the tale of Lisa Bonet's life after being a Cosby kid.

Honey, as well as it succeeds in targeting the young black woman, could use a little diversity in itself. Its launch issue flip-flopped between two different story ideas: 1) the story of a celebrated black woman and; 2) the newest fashions. It could use a shot of editorial adrenaline. Notably lacking are advice columns and features that spur interaction among its readers like quizzes and polls. While readers may at first look at Honey because of its targeted reader focus, it's going to take "sizzle" on the pages to get them back.
