GYM

The magazine for the physical man, gym, always features hot young men on its cover. On the surface this magazine reads just like a Men's Health or Men's Fitness. Cover lines shout "Blast Your Chest!: How to Get Powerful Pecs Now" and "Massive Back: Not as Hard as You Think."

But unlike most other men's fitness magazines, you don't see any women in the features. The cover even tries to sell itself on the fact that "One Life to Live's David Fumero Gets Ripped!" and how to get the best shave, plus a look at the fittest men of L.A.

That editorial content in gym is a bit different from most gym and weightlifting magazines. The content that most lifters and gym users tend to prefer ranges from muscle building supplements and diet programs to new techniques on workout regimens. It's obvious that gym isn't that sort of magazine. One of the lead stories is "10 Things Every Man Should Own-In the gym or out, you'll look great with these must-have accessories." Another seemingly odd feature is a fitness horoscope and a piece on "How to Feel that Sex Drive, Scorpions." Maybe it's just me, but don't "accessories" and "horoscopes" usually appear in titles like Cosmopolitan and Glamour?

When you add in the fact that each issue features about five men, most of whom are posing rather than lifting, gym starts to look like it might be targeting a non-traditional fitness audience. You have to wonder, especially once you flip to the back of the book where penis enlargement tools and all-male "work" videos are for sale. The sexual preference of gym's physical man should be evident.

One thing that I must say, however, is that for a man who is in the proverbial closet, purchasing gym, which features no visible nudity and a cover that sells on fitness, can be an inconspicuous means of looking at today's most toned men.
