USA Today Sports Weekly
At first this new launch seemed unremarkable and barely notable, but, if one considers the competitors its taking on, namely the 117-year-old The Sporting News, the launch of Sports Weekly takes on a new meaning and sets itself up for a competitive game, much like the competition facing the teams on its pages. No avid sports fan would pay $32 a year for information on one sport when they could pay the same amount, or slightly more, for a complete weekly wrap up of a variety of sports. So, with combined content to serve a wider audience, USA Today Sports Weekly was able to use its brand recognition alongside its authority as an informational resource and draw readers away from The Sporting News.
