1. What do you consider the single most important achievement your magazine has accomplished in today's marketplace?
Getting over 3,750 paid subscribers to receive the first issue without using direct mail (and creating a mechanism -- the Choose GOOD Campaign -- that gets young people to enthusiastically pay for a magazine subscription).
2. Looking back at your history, what was the most important hurdle you were able to overcome?
Putting out a first issue.
3. What was the biggest pleasant surprise?
Getting national distribution from CMG.
4. What is the biggest challenge you are facing today?
How do we get 50,000 subscribers in the next year and raise $1 million for charity.
5. Imagine you have a magic wand, and you can strike the magazine and make it a human being. Describe that human being.
A smart, engaged young person who has a lot of talent and wants to use his or her skills and energy to effectively make a positive impact on the world, whether it is using technology, business, education, art or other vehicles. This person is creative, motivated, sexy, trustworthy, fun and has a sense of humor.
6. The number of new magazine launches has been on a steady increase. What advice do you offer to someone wanting to start a new magazine?
Too late. We just came up with the last good idea.
