What's Hot What's New

The good, the bad and the ugly. You'll find them all here. Each week you'll get my take on the intriguing, and sometimes peculiar, titles to recently hit the newsstand.

Lemon
Cover Price: $7.99
www.lemonland.net

When life hands you a lemon...make a magazine out of it. Lemon is a pleasure to look at, a delight to sniff, with all that lemon scent, and an outstanding visual journey through the life of fashion, art and entertainment. Very artistic and unique both in its size and style, this launch can really be considered one of the groundbreakers of 2006, with articles ranging from interviews with cutting-edge artists to graphic novel-style illustrations. Don't forget to touch the textured section dividers and smell the lemon-scented pages. It's a shame that this is only published twice a year, but it's a smart move for such an expensive production. Although you may feel it's a very expensive lemon at $7.99, this fruit will give you more juice than the money you pay for it.

The Middle Magazine
Cover Price: $5.99
www.themiddlemag.com

What can you write and say about a magazine that lists Jesus Christ at the top of their masthead? I believe in giving credit and glory to God in everything, however, it's a little far-fetched to give glory by using Jesus Christ as one of your staffers. I applaud the concept that is geared toward "middle school pre-teens and teens like you that represent your 'hoods like no one else can." The concept of entertaining responsibly is a good one: you can still have fun without breaking the rules or sacrificing yourself. There is room for an urban teen magazine in the midst of all the other magazines out there. It's perfect to be in the middle.

Quince Girl
Cover Price: $5.99
www.quincegirl.com

It's a Sweet 16 in America but in Hispanic cultures it's the "quinceảera." Dedicated to the magic of coming of age, from the dresses to the budget to the tradition, Quince Girl reflects "15 and Fabulous" and a young lady's emergence into adulthood. With a lot to look at and very little to read, Quince Girl "I guess" is aimed at the busy Hispanic teen who is rushing to celebrate her "quinceảera." Published four times a year at $5.99, Quince Girl is one of many things to have on your way to becoming "15 and Fabulous."
