What's Hot What's New

The good, the bad and the ugly. You'll find them all here. Each week you'll get my take on the intriguing, and sometimes peculiar, titles to recently hit the newsstand.

Wholphin
Cover Price: $10.00
www.wholphindvd.com

From the creator of Might (a magazine which still holds a very dear place in my heart, yet is no longer on the newsstands) comes Dave Eggers latest innovation Wholphin. You can either pay $10 per issue and get it bundled with Believer or $22 and get it with McSweeney's. Either way you'll experience a true manifestation of what has become known as "liquid content" (i.e. content that starts with ink on paper and transforms to multimedia platforms.) It's a must-read and, as hard as it is for me to say, a must to view too (but preferably while you are reading it).

Film Fanaddict
Cover Price: $3.95
www.shockingimages.com

Whereas the fruits of Wholphin come with a hefty price, here is a "magazine worth paying for." That is, it's worth no more than the $3.95 you'll pay at the newsstand. Complete with cheap content and even cheaper photo quality, Film Fanaddict takes the cake as the worst magazine I've seen this year. The only conceivable silver lining of this dark cloud is the supplementary DVD, Asia Extreme. However, because of the quality of the magazine, I was too scared to open it or even watch it. While I applaud the passion and energy of the creator, I can't help but cringe at the quality of production.

Imagine FX
Cover Price: $14.99
www.futurenet.co.uk

We should always remember that magazines are both community creators and reflectors of community. For example, Imagine FX accomplishes this very dual role in "bringing together digital artists from around the globe." A British import, Imagine FX is a down-to-earth publication with an excellent DVD tutorial that leads you into the how-to of the know-how aspect of fantasy and sci-fi digital art. It's quite a delight to both look at and use.
